Thanks for the comment Alan, and I don’t at all disagree with you. As you may have gathered in the original article, I consider him to be the best athlete I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting so I would lose the “basketball” designation as well. I would add that he is a very genuine and unassuming person which in my opinion outweighs the athletic talent and it makes me even more pleased for Patrick and the Canadian team and their big win!

Just found your original article. We have been watching Patrick the entire tournament and were fortunate to be at the medal games on Saturday. Patrick is truly a Legend. Unbelievable team player, great D, incredible vision on the court and a leader who just simply took control of the game. 34 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists. I know he is referred to as the best wheelchair basketball player in the world. I think we take off the ‘wheelchair’ designation. He is quite simply – one of the best basketball players in the world.

Duff, this is such a beautiful tribute to our Randy – thank you. (I cannot believe there’s a picture of Gedion and Taye I hadn’t yet seen; Randy must have shown me 107 photos of your beautiful children….) I sure appreciate these comments and thank you so much for just reading it in the first place. I’ve had a number of people comment, both here and in other places, that it would be a great idea to have something named after Randy. I really would love to see it – just not entirely sure how to make it happen. I’ll keep talking about though. #RandyStarkman

Duff: Thank you for your heartfelt words about Randy Starkman, I met him only once — at a figure skating competition last year — and truly enjoyed talking with him. I immediately sensed the compassionate intelligence and good humor of this devoted family man/professional journalist, and this American feels privileged to have spent just a little time in his company. I’m not surprised at all to read that he sent books to your boys — I remember Randy jotting down a book title I suggested for his daughter. You and your family are truly fortunate to have known him. It would be fitting for a Canadian amateur sport or journalistic award to be named in his honor and I would be happy to help in any way I can.

Your words here have honoured Randy immensely. I never knew him, but after reading this, I wish I had. “He took a greater interest, asked more meaningful questions and just cared more than anyone else.” I can only hope and choose to live toward the day when someone might be able to speak those words about me.
